Special Olympics is the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event and a global movement which focuses on the empowerment of People of Determination with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport. The Special Olympics World Games 2019 will be hosted in UAE for the first time in the MENA region since the movement was founded over 50 years ago by Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
The event is held under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Over 7 000 athletes from over 170 countries will be coming to compete in a series of sports, as well as a variety of initiatives and activities held across the seven Emirates. The Games are considered more than a world-class sporting event. They are a catalyst to improve lives, to reach full collective potential, and to create greater social inclusion for people with and without intellectual disabilities in the UAE, in the region and globally.
The MENA Games utilized eight venues throughout Abu Dhabi, but the projection for the World Games in 2019 will double the number of venues due to the magnitude of the event. A comprehensive list of all hosting venues will be announced soon.
