In 2017, the first day of the Chinese New Year is on Saturday, 28 January, initiating another year of the rooster.
Chinese New Year, or in modern Chinese (since 1911) also known as the “Spring festival” is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional Lunar Chinese calendar.
Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and places with significant Chinese populations, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Mauritius and the Philippines.
Within China it is traditional for every family to gather for the annual reunion dinner.
Traditional celebration of Chinese New Year includes lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes, the parades, fun activities and orient-inspired live entertainment.
Also windows and doors will be decorated with red color paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “good fortune” or “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”.
