In the last five years, the UAE has increasingly engaged in policy work targeting the use of Arabic in education and research, the private sector, and everyday life in the country.
This presentation takes these broad policy goals as an entry point for a discussion of some of the findings from an in-depth, ethnographic investigation of the language practices of expatriate individuals living in Ras Al Khaimah.
It will focus primarily on how these individuals engage (and disengage) with Arabic in their daily lives and use their experiences as a starting point to explore some of the potential challenges facing the UAE as it works towards its Arabic language policy goals.
