Essential oils are extracted from plants and used for a plethora of reasons nowadays, from scented candles to diffusers to topical applications. But what is the best essential oil? Well, in this article we will be diving deep into the world of Essential oils, and which ones are highly ranked among aromatherapists.
Before diving into specific scents, it’s important to understand how essential oils work. They contain volatile compounds that, when inhaled or absorbed through the skin, interact with the brain, specifically, the region that is responsible for emotions, memory, and stress response. As a result, essential oils can influence mood, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being.
There are actually so many brands out there, who rely on these techniques to market their brand. “A perfume brand that uses essential oils to boost and change moods”.
It is important to understand, that each essential oil has its own therapeutic benefit, so which ones are the best, and what are their benefits? Based on my own experience as a candle maker, I would rank essential oils this way, based on scent:
Renowned for its calming and relaxing properties, lavender is often used to promote sleep, reduce stress, and alleviate anxiety. Its sweet, floral scent is soothing and comforting.
I ranked it so high up, because it’s the most common thing that people know about, and when it comes to scent, people will buy what they are used to, and nothing that they are unfamiliar with. So that, combined with the great scent, and excellent benefits, Lavender would be number 1.
With its exotic, floral aroma, ylang-ylang is known for its ability to reduce stress, improve mood, and balance hormones. It can also be used to promote relaxation and enhance intimacy. The scent gives you a luxurious vibe almost as if you are sitting in a private jet sipping on your favorite champagne.
I found this essential oil to be really useful when I want to wind down after a long day at work, and to my surprise when I first used the oil, it worked. So due to that, and the amazing scent, I have it ranked on number 2.
When you think citrus, you think bright, uplifting, and energetic, and this is not only correlated with color psychology. It is scientifically known that the cheerful, uplifting scent of orange can boost mood, reduce stress, and increase energy levels.
Personally, I think bergamot is too strong to the nose, and is not widely liked by people, at least as much as Lavender or Ylang-Ylang.
Another common scent among the nose is Jasmine. Its delicate, floral scent is often associated with love, romance, and happiness; something similar to Rose. It can help to reduce anxiety, improve mood, and promote relaxation.
Cedarwood’s warm, woody scent is grounding, calming, and balancing. It can help to reduce stress, improve sleep, and promote relaxation.
This scent is earthy, deep, and grounded. I enjoy it because it gives me a “lounge” vibe when filled in a space. However, due to the fact that it’s a base note, and it takes a lot of time to fill a room, I ranked it down at number 5.
Now, we have floral, fruity, citrusy, and earthy scents, so there is something for everyone. However, with all that, it is important to understand that the best-smelling essential oil is ultimately a matter of personal preference. By exploring different scents and understanding their benefits, you can find the perfect oil to enhance your mood, promote relaxation, and improve your overall well-being.
