The essence of Ramadan is multifaceted and versatile. Muslims comprehend it through a lifelong study. Here are more facts about the Holy Month.

  • Observance of fasting throughout the entire month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam – the duties imposed on each Muslim. Fasting in the holy month is called Sawn. The other pillars are Salat – prayers, performed in the prescribed manner five times a day; Zakat – donations to the poor; Shahadah – believing there is no deity but God and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as his messenger, and also Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, which every Muslim must make, whose physical and financial conditions allow it.

  • There were traditions to determine the onset of the Iftar time, which today is remembered only by historians. When it was impossible to accurately calculate the time of sunset, the Muslims used to observe the shadows. The shadow of an object or even a stick stuck in the ground reached a certain place, which was determined empirically – and at that moment the believers could stop their day fast. Another interesting tradition was the use of threads. If you picked up a white and black thread and you could not distinguish their colors, it meant that the sun hours of the day was over and it was time to pray.
  • During Ramadan, the economy of many Muslim countries is greatly affected. Productivity is reduced in almost all industries due to the fact that workers operate on reduced hours and often experience physical discomfort. At the same time, the prices of some goods, such as tea or fruit, might increase. Due to that, some economies may even experience inflationary trends.
  • Different Muslim countries have different policies regarding the violation of fasting. In some countries, the offender will have to pay a fine or work in public works, and in some countries, even a prison sentence is considered for such offense.

  • Since good deeds during Ramadan are much more rewarded, many Muslims donate more money to charity this month than at other times of the year. Sometimes the amount donated during the Ramadan to the needs of the poor exceeds the donation for the whole year.

Dua

O Allah, on this day, make me among those who love Your friends, and hate Your enemies, following the way of Your last Prophet, O the Guardian of the hearts of the Prophets.
