Hiwa K: Do You Remember What You Are Burning?

Hiwa K: Do You Remember What You Are Burning? - Coming Soon in UAE
16 December 2020 - 24 July 2021 10:00 AM - 06:00 PM
Dubai |

Hiwa K’s first solo exhibition, ‘Do you remember what you are burning?’ will be open every day from December 16 to July 24 2021 at the Jameel Arts Centre.

The exhibition is set to feature a cohesive body of work that blends Hiwa K’s humor with his personal experience. His collection will explore ideas of estrangement, collectivity, histories of neoliberalism, and shadow of the multiple conflicts waged on and in Iraq, particularly in his home city of Sulaymaniyah.

Facts about Hiwa K’s ‘Do you remember what you are burning?’ exhibition:

  • It brings together videos and installations created over the past 10 years
  • Outdoor installation, One Room Apartment  which was originally commissioned for Documenta 14 in 2017;
  • A new, interactive large-scale commission for this show.
  • This is the artists’ first solo exhibition in Asia and the Middle East;
  • It was conceived as a three-venue collaboration with Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin and The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto, and Hiwa K.

After graduating from high school in Iraq, Hiwa K continued his self-education in fields like European literature, philosophy, and available books translated into Arabic. His own education leaves a strong impression within his works, which are the result of a continuous critique of the art education system. Hiwa K’s works were included in group exhibitions at Documenta 14 (2017), 56th Venice Biennial curated by Okwui Enwezor (2015), The Contemporary Jewish Museum (2019), National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan (2019), and more.
