Founded in 1945 by the legendary dance couple Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili, this 70-strong ensemble is recognized for its unparalleled repertoire, encompassing folk dances from diverse Georgian ethnic groups and theatrical performances accompanied by live music played on traditional folk instruments.
What distinguishes the Sukhishvili Georgian National Dance Company is its remarkable capacity for leaping, a spectacle that few dancers globally can emulate. The performers, akin to birds soaring toward the sun, create an awe-inspiring display of agility and grace. This extraordinary ensemble achieved a remarkable feat at the renowned La Scala stage in Milan, where the curtain rose an astounding 14 times—a world record-setting accomplishment.
Having embarked on 300 tours and delivered over 20,000 performances in 98 countries, the Sukhishvili Georgian National Dance Company has graced iconic venues such as the Albert Hall, the Coliseum, New York’s Metropolitan Opera House, and Madison Square Garden. Notably, their performances in the United States were twice recognized as the best shows on Broadway.
Sukhishvili’s influence extends beyond the realm of dance, even shaping the world of fashion. Their mesmerizing Parisian performance served as the inspiration for a collection by Yves Saint Laurent, the renowned French fashion designer. In the 1950s and 1960s, influential designers like Chanel, Giorgio Armani, and Christian Dior collaborated with Nino Ramishvili to create sumptuous and exquisitely delicate stage costumes for the ensemble.
In 2020, the Sukhishvili Georgian National Dance Company made its debut in Dubai, leaving an indelible mark on audiences. Now, the ensemble is set to captivate Abu Dhabi with its first performance in the city, offering a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to witness the magic of Georgian folk dance brought to life by this iconic cultural ambassador. Named the world’s greatest dancer by the Washington Post, the Georgian National Dance Company’s performance in Abu Dhabi promises to be a true source of inspiration and pleasure—an unmissable cultural event.
