Khalil Gibran is an outstanding Arab writer, poet, artist and philosopher of the last century. In the autobiographical novel Broken Wings, published in 1912, he spoke of tragic first love. Broken Wings musical, the new adaptation of the novel, is written by Nadim Naaman and Dana Al Fardan, directed by Bronagh Lagan, orchestrations created by Joe Davison, production producer – Ali Matar.
The events of this tragic story take place in Beirut at the turn of the century. The protagonist of the novel falls in love with a woman who is already engaged to another, and their love faces religious and social obstacles that will ultimately break the hearts of lovers, just as they will break the wings of their love. The events of Broken Wings highlight key issues of the time, yet the themes and debates raised remain increasingly relevant today, over a century later; the fight for gender equality, the freedom to love who we love, tradition versus modernity, wealth versus happiness, immigration and the importance of ‘home’.
