Formed in Leningrad in the early 1980s, the band gradually moved from the underground rock scene to nationwide popularity. Albums such as «45», «Noch» (Night), «Gruppa krovi» (Blood Type), and «Zvezda po imeni Solntse» (A Star Called the Sun) established KINO as a major force in Soviet music. Their growing popularity eventually brought them to large concert venues and international audiences.
KINO became particularly famous for songs built around simple but powerful melodies, memorable guitar arrangements, and concise lyrics dealing with freedom, change, uncertainty, conflict, and the search for meaning. «Gruppa krovi», released in 1988, was a major breakthrough and helped create a phenomenon often described as “Kinomania”. The band’s music resonated strongly with Soviet youth during the era of glasnost and perestroika, while songs such as “Gruppa krovi”, “Zvezda po imeni Solntse” and “Peremen!” became enduring cultural symbols. KINO’s influence extended beyond music: the band’s aesthetic and sound helped shape the development of Russian rock and introduced a distinctive post-punk sensibility to a much wider audience.
KINO’s importance has continued long after the band’s original period of activity. The group is now regarded as a landmark of Russian rock, with its recordings remaining widely listened to and its songs repeatedly reinterpreted by later musicians. The band’s legacy has also been sustained through archival releases, modern performances by surviving members, and renewed interest from younger listeners. KINO’s ability to turn relatively minimalist rock music into emotionally powerful anthems, while capturing the atmosphere of a major cultural transition, is a central reason the band remains famous and influential.
